| Abstract: | The urban seismic risk was highlighted in the presentation with a series of photographs showing the devastating effects of earthquakes in various cities. The different phases of disaster mitigation and management, and the vulnerability and risk reduction initiatives were touched upon. Further the provisions in the IS codes for earthquake resistant design was discussed followed by engineering innovations for seismic safety and seismic evaluation in buildings. Awareness amoung public through education was suggested and the concluding part of the presentation involved the Government of India initiatives in earthquake risk mitigation. |
